Music & Entertainment | Take A Chance — Chance the Rapper

musicandentertainment_logo

First and foremost, I must say that I’m an avid music fan and particularly favor the hip-hop genre. Although for some reason, it’s difficult for people to understand that choice. Many people associate the hip-hop/rap style of music as crude and offensive. There is some reason and proof to this claim but honestly, there are a lot of great messages found in the genre. The fact is, people need to actually look for the artists that send a truthful and honest message. And for me, this is where real uniqueness and creativity is found. My most recent discovery was a Midwest rapper from Chicago, Illinois named Chancellor Bennett, more commonly known by his stage name Chance the Rapper.

The first song I had heard from him was actually “Long Night” with him as a feature alongside Hoodie Allen. Chance’s voice definitely caught me off guard. It was a mixture of singing, rapping, and high-pitched noises. But I liked it. And from there on, I decided to search his name for more popular songs. I came across “Acid Rain” and “Brain Cells.” I was simply awe struck. The first line of “Brain Cells” gripped me instantly, “Here’s a tab of acid for your ear/ you’re the plastic, I’m the passion and the magic in the air.” At that moment, I had to search for his discography and that’s when I stumbled upon his latest mixtape, Acid Rap.

After listening to the mixtape, I was thoroughly impressed. He had such a different style of rapping. It reminded me of KiD CuDi’s way of singing and rapping at the same time. It creates an individual harmony that quickly becomes addictive. I was particularly excited when I came across “Smoke Again,” a collaboration with Chance featuring my current favorite rapper, Ab-Soul. Granted, the song is purely about having a good time and smoking weed but the punch lines deliver nonetheless. In fact, many bloggers have raved that Chance’s best line on the mixtape can be found in that song, “Lean on a square, that’s a f***ing rhombus.” I just about screamed when I heard that play on words.

Now if you’re not a hip-hop head, this might not be your best introduction to the genre because some of the content is heavy and explicit. But if you enjoy clever and unique rap, this is definitely a rapper to look out for. I can easily see him making a name for himself and even having a single on the top rap and R&B charts. He has versatility in his music, a rare find these days. Oh, and did I mention he’s younger than I am. Yup, he’s 20 years young. So if you’re looking for a good place to start, search Acid Rap, download it or burn a CD, and head out for a nice cruise.
