Music & Entertainment | Mint Condition At Jackson Rhythm & Blues Festival

Two Friday mornings ago, my husband and I were planning out our day to make sure we got to the Jackson Rhythm and Blues Festival on time that evening. We didn’t want to miss a second of Mint Condition’s (MC) performance. We’d planned to only attend that first night of the two-day event to see them, but at the last minute, my hubby won tickets to both days. WAPT News Channel 16 held a call to win tickets every morning that week; he won the last call. Great big thanks to WAPT News Channel 16.

I didn’t do my homework ahead of time to know what time Mint Condition was actually supposed to perform so we got there super early, as in 5:30p and they weren’t scheduled to perform until 11:30pm. This turned out to be a good thing because we were able to discover some new music. We first grabbed a few drinks before deciding which act to catch first. Shout out to the most awesome and hottest bartending duo from World of Wines, Tyler Layton and Melissa Jones who know how to get a party started. They first hooked me up with a Blues Cat then later that evening I tried the Blue Margarita (they were both sooo good). Another shout out to John and Mary for introducing us to fried string beans, they were delicious. Drinks in hand, hubby and I went to check out a few acts we’d never heard of. If you don’t know these ladies, Nikki Hill, Eden Brent, and Lacee please google them, they are fantastic.

When we finally headed over to the main stage Leela James was doing her thing. She had some great audience participation going on with folks from the audience up on stage grooving with her. But when MC finally took the stage the crowd of MC FOOMs (friends of our music), especially us women, really came alive.

The guys sound just as good live as they do in the studio. I’ve seen videos of their live performance and knew they could bring high energy, but somehow I was still surprised. I kept wondering how Rickey and Stokley could spin around so fast and for so long without falling out. It was great. And needless to say Stokley is a master vocalist. He had me sounding a mess trying to copy him when I got home.

Even if I had only gotten to see Mint Condition, I would have to declare the first annual Jackson Rhythm and Blues Festival a hit. Between the non-stop performances, good grub and full cups, there was always something to get into and the time just flew by. I can’t wait till next year.
