Teen Who Killed 4 In Drunk Driving Crash Avoids Prison Because He’s “Wealthy”


Money and privilege are the two themes in this story: 16 year old avoids his 20 year prison sentence because apparently he and his family are wealthy. Ethan Couch, who killed 4 people in a drunk driving incident, was instead awarded 10 years probation — and to top it, his blood alcohol level was .24, three times the legal limit for an adult.


In this article, written by Simon McCormack, reported that Psychologist G. Dick Miller testified for the defense that Couch suffered from “affluenza,” a condition in which “his family felt that wealth bought privilege and there was no rational link between behavior and consequences.”

Miller also stated that Couch’s parents never punished him for his behavior, even when, in a separate incident, cops found him passed out in a car with a naked 14-year-old girl.
