Food + Nutrition | Ehh. Subway Removing Shoe Rubber & Yoga Mat Ingredient From Bread

I’ve been giving up just about all fast food restaurants slowly, but surely, and now Subway tops it. I can’t read anymore about all the harmful chemicals going in our body. Chemicals that may not hurt you in the beginning, but continuing to consume those chemicals excessively, will definitely hit you in the years to come.

The publicists for the Subway chain will be extremely busy over the coming days and weeks. Why? Because the company is in the process of removing a chemical from its bread called azodicarbonamide — a bleaching agent also used to make yoga mats and shoe rubber.

Well that ain’t fresh. And as of today — no more subway for me.

Although they are removing the chemical, this still makes me question what else are they keeping from us?

The Huff Post states: As Americans pay closer attention to what they eat, food companies have worked to market their products as natural. But companies have also come under growing pressure to remove chemicals people find questionable. That pressure has been heightened by consumers’ ability to voice and share their concerns online. Last year, for instance, PepsiCo said it would remove an ingredient that had been linked to a flame retardant from its Gatorade drinks.

Coming from someone who grew up in Mississippi, I was never taught what to eat and what not to eat. I just ate what was given to me for breakfast, lunch and dinner with absolutely no questions in return. I’m thankful for that experience — being able to eat like a child should (America’s standards) and live happily with food always being placed in front of me. But from my 3+ years living in DC, I’ve also become thankful for being educated on all the less harmful foods that should be going into our body. My diet/lifestyle has changed tremendously and I’m very cautious about what I eat. Chemicals no longer touch my skin, so why should they go into my body?

You are what you eat!

  1. Well said. Indeed, things no longer taste the same as they did when we were kids. The freshness is missing and the no of processed foods available has exploded. I have no trouble believing that big food companies are using cheap/harmful substances for mass producing food to be consumed by unsuspecting masses. I fear for countries like India, where there is little consumer activism. All these unsafe practices are probably going unchecked contributing to avoidable lifestyle diseases like diabetes and cancers. Horrible.
