Interview | Priest Tyaire Brings His Successful StagePlay “Mrs. Independent” To Washington, DC Mother’s Day Weekend

Priest Tyaire, the writer, producer and actor in upcoming play, “Mrs. Independent”, is literally on the brink of becoming the very next Tyler Perry as he has a solid track record of selling out shows in Philly, Atlanta, Delaware, and New Jersey. In fact, his shows have been so successful, that a major Los Angeles Promoter recently joined his team as his official backer – working to make him the next Tyler Perry level star – and second African American playwright to accomplish this level of success in history.  Priest Tyaire is bringing his  latest hit stage play “Mrs. Independent” to DC on Mother’s Day Weekend featuring celebrity cast members Robin Givens of “Boomerang” and “Fresh Prince of Bel Air”; Shirley Murdock and Christopher Williams. This highly anticipated production is scheduled to take place at the Warner Theatre – May 8th thru 11th – and is sure to have audiences on the edge of their seats, while also leaving them with a message of hope and encouragement for the entire family. I got a chance to catch up with this highly successful playwright to get a more in depth view of his success and story behind “Mrs. Independent”.

CHARLI >> How did you become involved in the entertainment industry, specifically a playwright?

PRIEST >> It was actually the influence of my mom that encouraged me to become a playwright in the first place. My mom actually took me to my first play as a kid. So, when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2007, God lead me to write a play to honor her life. She had two kids by the age of 15, yet she went and earned her master’s degree later in life. Her will to persevere in-spite of her circumstances, was an inspiration to me and I wanted to share it with others. I started attending as many plays as I could, and studying the work of other famous playwrights, so I could learn this skill. I couldn’t type, so I wrote my first script ‘The Tears of a Teenage Mother” with a $1 notebook and a .59 ink pen. Regrettably, my mom passed away just two weeks before the two show sold out debut. The response and positive feedback was overwhelming so we did the show 13 more times and now 7 years later and 7 plays later I am living my dream as a playwright. In many ways, when people bring their moms to see my play in DC, they will also be honoring the life and legacy of my own mom.

CHARLI >> What have been some of your biggest challenges throughout your successful journey as a playwright?

PRIEST >> My biggest challenges have been losing both of my parents in the beginning of my career. My father passed two weeks before the debut of my second play presented at the acclaimed Merriam Theater. While forsaking all, losing a house and a car to support my dream was hard, not having my parents here to see my success is harder.

CHARLI >> Who is featured in the show?

PRIEST >> Some of the leading stars in the show include Robin Givens of “Boomerang” ; Songstress, Shirley Murdock known for the hit song “As We Lay”; Actor and Singer Christopher Williams from “New Jack City” “Tony Grant from “The Marriage Counselor” and his beautiful wife Trisha Mann-Grant from the “Clean-up Woman”.

CHARLI >> What is the play Mrs. Independent all about?

PRIEST >> “Mrs. Independent”, takes audiences on a riveting, yet thought-provoking journey of exploring questions like – Can a woman still love her husband if she is the primary breadwinner? Will the roles reverse with her wearing the pants while he ultimately works to honor her every demand? But, what if he is a good man that’s faithful and does actually contribute to the household? Is it possible that true love, affection and Godly integrity can be restored to the marriage?

In the show, Trey (Priest Tyaire), maintains an honest and respectable salary of only $40,000 a year as a head mechanic, but his wife, Carleena (Robin Givens), climbs the corporate ladder as an attorney with a six figure income. This creates a financial imbalance in the marriage which makes it difficult for Carleena to see Trey as a “respectable” husband and leads their marriage on a downward spiral of emotional and spiritual conflict. However, love, redemption and hope are restored to everyone in the end – but you must see the play to find out how.

CHARLI >> Through the PR outreach, I heard that this show was actually birthed out of a personal and painful experience for you – can you tell us more about this?

PRIEST >> I was in a relationship with a young lady that I really cared about, and she made more money than me. She had a master’s degree and I was just an electrician. To balance out the relationship, I cooked, cleaned and did extra to prove my love for her in-spite of our salary gap. I endured some very painful moments in that relationship, as well as some very harsh words that were spoken against me that I still remember to this day.  The great thing about this whole experience is that it actually pushed me to go back to school and pursue my career goals, start 2 businesses and write this highly acclaimed play – Mrs. Independent.

CHARLI >> What has it been like working with Robin Givens, Shirley Murdock and Christopher Williams?

PRIEST >> It’s been a very powerful experience working with such accomplished and well-known celebrities. As the writer, producer and director of the show, I have to direct these stars who have already risen to the top in entertainment, music and film.  Therefore, there are times when I am only focused on instructing them through the artistic and dramatic aspects of the play, and, there are other times that I just have to sit back and learn from them. It’s been a wonderful journey and I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world.
