Student Lifestyle: What Has Changed Over the Past 10 Years?

When we talk about changes in lifestyle, it impossible not to think about technology. The past 10 years, we have witnessed the biggest technological advancement especially with the widespread appearance of laptops in colleges. Many students have laptops, smartphones, iPads, iPods or other MP3 players. Social media and blogs have grown with increased penetration of smartphones. It is easy to conclude that student lifestyles have improved. However, basing our induction on technology may make our claim biased. There exist arguments that school life has not changed over the last 50 years. Is it that there is too much hype over new technology? Looking at students’ lifestyle as a whole may help us unlock the riddle. Students’ lifestyle can be examined by looking at where they live, socialization, eating habits, spending habits, personal pressures and university facilities and services.

Student Housing

There has been increased off campus housing over the past ten years. Students prefer living in privately rented flats where they contribute more than USD. $300 per month to the cheaper campus hostels. The reason is increased desire for independence.

Socializing

Although the number of closed doors has been on the rise, many students stay or go to their friends’ houses. Others run bars, cafes and clubs in college environments. Socialization is one cause of the increasing smoking and drinking habits in college. Studies show that as the college workload increases, student live quieter lives. Lack of cash has impeded socialization with a considerable number spending their time in part-time jobs.

Eating Habits

Students spend most of their money on food. The number of food outlets in colleges has increased. There is increased effort to eat healthily. Students rarely prepare meals; they do so at least once a week depending on the price of such meals. Missing meals is also more common among students nowadays than it was 10 years ago.

Time Spending

Majority of students spend their time traveling to classes or in lecture halls, labs and seminars, and libraries. Fewer buy books compared to those who go for digital learning materials. Many students spend up to 10 hours logged on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or Pinterest. There are those who spend half of their private time doing part-time jobs, clubs or in sports.

Personal Pressures

According to website where you can buy essays, students give attention to the courses they take in relation to their relevance in the job market. There is increased pressure for them to excel in academics if they are to stand a chance to get employment after graduation.

University Facilities

Colleges have been forced to put up infrastructure that accommodate the large influx of students in colleges. More lectures have gone online or recorded. The internet has been provided as WI-FI access has been spread to halls of residence. Colleges have also put up measures to meet increased power demands and reduce waste. They are increased calls to improve IT facilities, clubs, cafes, and sports facilities.
