Health + Fitness | Tips On Keeping the Workout Resolution Fire Burning

A New Year comes, resolutions are made and resolutions are broken, but sticking to a New Year’s workout resolution can be an important key to maintaining overall health and wellness in 2015.

Fitness, or “working out,” according to a search by Twitter, was the most common New Year’s resolution mentioned in 2014. Sadly, however, according to a study by the University of Scranton, more than a quarter of those making resolutions stop by January 15. While 45 percent of all Americans will make New Year’s resolutions, only eight percent will actually achieve their goal.

The health and wellness experts at Mannatech have observed this trend of broken resolutions and have several tips to help people maintain their fitness resolutions.

“My own experience is that sticking to a healthy fitness regime, especially in the high-speed lives that we live today, can be extremely difficult,” said Dr. Robert Sinnott, Mannatech CEO and Chief Science Officer.  “The most important thing is to keep a positive attitude. Dr. Sinnott offers several tips for those trying to maintain their workout resolutions:

  1. Be realistic and holistic: Don’t approach a workout program as a way to shed 50 pounds in a month or think that you’ll be ready to run a marathon after a few weeks of training. Find a balance. Take a whole-body approach to living a healthy lifestyle by setting realistic workout goals and eating a healthy diet.
  2. Set a plan: Outline what you’d like to attain:  – weight loss, increased strength or performance improvement. Ask yourself what exercises you’re going to do to reach those goals, then set a realistic timetable and stick to them.
  3. Even a little exercise can help: If you are traveling or stuck at work, you can still exercise your fitness plans. Most hotels have fitness rooms, but if they don’t, try using the stairwells or swimming pool for exercise. Try stretching at your office, or take a quick walk during lunch. Every bit of exercise helps.
  4. Give yourself a break: Okay, it will happen. You’ll skip a workout, or you’ll give in to that cupcake temptation.  Don’t punish yourself. Occasional slips are actually better than denying yourself a reward and ending up in a binge situation. If you need a break, take it. If you want a piece of cake, eat it – but just one.
  5. Keep trying! You may not see results right away, but keep at it. You can only benefit from exercise ŧ. At some point your efforts will show, and it will all be worth it.
