Getting to know someone new can be difficult for some people. Whether it’s a potential friend or someone you’re interested in romantically, you can feel awkward. You want to know more about them and let them know more about you. But you’re nervous that they might not like you, or even that you could end up not liking them. Finding ways to get to know something can be a bit confusing, especially if you just want to be their friend. How do you ask someone to get coffee without it sounding like a date? If you’re not sure how to make new friends, try doing some of these things to get to know them better.
If you’ve talking for a bit but you want to learn more about each other, you can prompt a conversation with a game. Ask each other questions about the important things in their lives, from their family to their work. It might seem at first that you’re just getting facts and figures. You don’t know someone just because they’ve told you they have two siblings, and their favorite color is blue. But as you trade questions and answers, you can both open up. You can start giving longer responses and showing your personalities more. Eventually, you’ll forget all about the questions and have a free-flowing conversation.

Do Silly Stuff
Remember that the beginning of a relationship doesn’t have to be heavy right away. If you’re not keen on small talk, there are other ways to engage with each other. You don’t have to jump right into discussing politics or quantum physics. One of the best ways to connect with someone new is to laugh with them. Looking at silly things, such as videos and funny pictures online, will let you share your sense of humor with them. Laughing together will help you to form a bond and share your interests. So show them your favorite cat video or tell them a joke to get them laughing.
Go Out Together
Spending time together in a social setting gives you space to grow your friendship. Maybe you usually talk at work or school, and you want to get out of that environment. There are lots of things you can do together, from having a drink to going for a run. If you only want to be friends and you don’t wish to propose a date accidentally, try going out as a group. You can also avoid stereotypical date settings, like cafes, bars, and restaurants.
Have Engaging Conversations
Eventually, it’s time to move past the small talk. Some people find it difficult anyway, so you’re probably glad to move on. Your conversations don’t all have to be intellectual and profound. But they should start to go beyond short questions and answers. You might have a discussion about a show you both love or talk about all the places you want to travel to.
A lot of people find it difficult to make friends as an adult. But it’s never too late to get to know new people, whether for friendly or romantic purposes.
