Everybody talks about what you should do when buying gifts. But does anybody tell you the things you shouldn’t do? They’re just as important! Have a read through this guide for a few things you shouldn’t do when buying gifts:
Worry About What Somebody Else is Spending on You
You shouldn’t worry about what somebody else is spending on you. The factors will usually be completely different. For instance, the amount of money you make or have saved, the occasion, etc. If it’s an anniversary present for your boyfriend but he makes more money than you, he probably won’t mind at all if you buy something that costs less than what he’s bought. You can find loads of unique gift ideas for him online. Worrying about this shouldn’t come into it! If you worry about what somebody else is spending on you and spend more money for that reason, you may as well have just bought one another nothing. The amount you’re spending needs to make you feel comfortable.

Spend More Than You Can Afford
You shouldn’t spend more than you can afford on a gift. While it’s nice to make somebody smile with a great gift, if you can’t afford it, it’s just silly. If you’re not sure what you can afford, take a look at your ingoings and outgoings to come up with a real budget. It might seem a bit extreme, but it can stop you from going into your overdraft. You shouldn’t have to buy expensive gifts for anybody to like you. It should be enough that you’ve bought a gift at all, regardless of cost!
Forget to Get a Gift Receipt
Unfortunately, they won’t always like a gift. This might not be your fault. The gift might be really similar to something they already own, not fit them, or just not their style. Whatever the reason, you shouldn’t forget to get a gift receipt. This will allow them to swap it or get the money back and buy something else. Try not to take it personally if they don’t like what you’ve bought, for whatever reason.
Ask What They Want
Even though it can be hard to think of gift ideas sometimes, it’s much better to get something that will be a surprise. It shows the recipient that you have put time and effort into thinking of what they would like. Remember, it’s the thought that counts.
Buy a Gift You Could Make Yourself
You shouldn’t buy a gift that you could potentially make yourself. Have you ever considered making something yourself? It’s so much more thoughtful and sentimental. It probably isn’t as hard to do as you thought either. Just check YouTube for some tutorial videos and you’ll see for yourself!
