The thought that a loved one – a friend or relative could be addicted to alcohol is a scary one. You’ve probably known a friend of a friend who was addicted to alcohol but never thought that it could happen to someone close to you. The truth is, anyone of any age can become addicted to alcohol, and it’s important to realize that.

If you’ve noticed that a friend has been drinking a lot, it’s important to think about whether they could be addicted. If they’re the one that tends to suggest going for drinks and drinks the most, they may have a problem. If you’re worried, the best thing that you can do is find a way to help them.

You’re probably terrified at the prospect of bringing up their drinking, but if you care about them, you have to. To make things a little easier for you, here are a few tips that should help.

Make them a cup of tea and have a friendly chat

How you go about talking to them is important, so ensure you get it right. Arrange to meet up with your friend for a cup of tea and a chat. Choose a location that they’ll feel comfortable and relaxed in, such as their home. It’s important to tell them how worried you are about them without sounding accusing, as this will put them on guard. Don’t say, “We need to talk about your alcohol addiction.” Instead, say something like “I’m worried about you, I’ve noticed you’ve been drinking a lot lately.”

By expressing your concern, instead of accusing them, you’ll put them at ease. The last thing you want is to end up in an argument with them, as then they’ll feel like they can’t turn to you. Explain to them what behavior it is that has worried you – be specific and give them lots of detail. Often, alcoholics don’t realize that they have a problem, so you may need to convince them.

Ask them what’s bothering them

Often, people turn to drink because something’s been bothering them. It may be obvious what the problem is, or you may have no clue what could be wrong. If your loved one has recently lost someone special to them, broken up with a partner or lost their job, this could be the cause of their drinking. It’s important to try to help them work out why they drink, as this is crucial to their recovery.

They may not feel like sharing this information with you, which is fine, don’t try to push them. Instead, suggest that it might be a good idea for them to speak to a counselor about what’s going on. Your best bet is to get in touch with a company that offers addiction recovery services. So that they can put you in touch with a suitable counselor. They’ll also be able to recommend the best ways that you can help your friend to beat their addiction, so it’s worth getting in touch.

Help them to stay on track

Once they’ve got help the most important thing that you can do is be there for them. Quitting alcohol, when we’re often surrounded by it, is hard, and so, they’ll need as much help and support as possible. To make it easier for them to stay on the wagon, at parties and social events, offer to stay sober with them. Explain to them that you hate waking up with hangovers and feeling rubbish all day, so you’d rather not drink.

You may not expect someone you know to become addicted to alcohol, but it can happen to anyone. That’s why, if you notice someone drinking more than normal, it’s important that you don’t ignore it.
