With more entertainment demanding our time than ever before, it can be hard to know what to sit down and watch in the evening. People don’t just want throwaway characters and boring, cliched plots. We want to be entertained, thrilled and fascinated. However, it’s quite hard to find something that does all those things.
On February 2, cable network FX premiered the first of a ten-episode anthology series, titled American Crime Story. Each series will tell a different crime story, and season two is currently in development.
The first series, however, is in full swing. It tells the true story of the O.J. Simpson murder trial, which spanned from November 1994 to October 1995. O.J. was a professional football player and actor, tried for two counts of murder after his ex-wife and waiter both died in June 1994. It’s the most publicized trial in history, and O.J. was found not guilty after a grueling eight month trial.
It’s fascinating stuff, and there are many reasons why it’s worth a watch. Here are three of the main ones!

It’s based on truth, and real events
Everyone loves a true story. It makes the events feel that bit more real, and makes them resonate a lot more. The People v. O.J. Simpson is the quintessential real-life tale, and one of the shows consultants has declared it a “word-for-word” recreation of events.
The truth of the tale has been retained and not altered, meaning what you get on screen is what actually happened.
You’ve never seen this story told like this before
Sure, there have been a million documentaries about the murder trial, but The People v. O.J. Simpson is different. For starters, it’s not a documentary. It’s a full on narrative based story, spanning ten lengthy episodes.
The series chronicles the story from the very beginning, starting with how the LAPD identified Simpson as a suspect. We’re introduced to lawyers, detectives and friends, real-life people who were actually there at the time. It’s refreshing to see the truth not minced, and the show is all the better for it.
Some of the world’s best actors help to tell the tale
I’m not kidding either. From Cuba Gooding Jr. as Simpson, to John Travolta as defense attorney Robert Shapiro, the cast shines. It’s important to get respected actors if you want your piece to be respected, and American Crime Story is off to a great start.
Friends star David Schwimmer also pops up as O.J’s friend and attorney Robert Kardashian. It can be quite hard to forget that you’re watching some of the world’s biggest stars, but luckily they all sink into their respective roles. It’s a treat to watch these talents help tell such an important, fascinating tale, and having them on board ups the credibility of the show by a ton.
Whether you want to be the next Spielberg, or just enjoy a good story, you can’t go wrong with American Crime Story. The People v. O.J. Simpson is just the beginning, and there’s more goodness to come.
