Love + Relationships | How to Handle a Holiday Romance

loveandrelationships_logo

Holiday romances can be amazing. You don’t always go looking for a holiday romance, most of the time they just sort of happen. But what is the right way to handle a romance? Leaving one another can be very difficult when the holiday is over, and how can you be sure this person is genuine? These tips will help you:

Keep Your Wits About You

Try not to get swept up in your holiday romance too soon. You must keep your wits about you when meeting people on holiday. People don’t always say what they mean, and this romance might not mean as much to them as it does to you. Stay smart and realise that although getting to know each other is really fun and exciting, you don’t actually know each other. If they begin talking about marriage and things like that in the early stages, they might literally be after a passport or visa. Things like this happen a lot, so you really need to be careful. If you really feel they are genuine, that’s up to you. You’ll need to know the difference between a fiance and spouse visa.

Don’t Take Silly Risks

Make sure you don’t take silly risks because of this romance. Don’t get too drunk alone with this person without telling anybody where you’re going or when you’ll be back. Don’t do dangerous things. Don’t immediately decide to move your whole life to be with them either! Things could change pretty quickly, so do be careful and try to take it slow.

Continue to Communicate

Once you’ve arrived home, you’ll likely be on a bit of a comedown from all of the excitement. If you have both decided to continue to communicate, great! This can be an indication of whether things will really work out for you two or not. You could call one another, Skype, or simply email.

Take Things With a Pinch of Salt

They might feel strongly about you, but it’s easy for the other party to say things they don’t really mean. Not in a malicious way; it’s just the excitement of it all. If they say they are going to call you every day or something that requires a lot of commitment, take it with a pinch of salt. If it does work out, then that’s a bonus. Things can seem so much more serious when you’re in a foreign country with nothing else to worry about. It really can feel like true love. Just bear in mind that arriving home can soon sober you up!

Be Prepared for Off Days

Once you’re home and you’re staying in touch, you might be coming up with plans for your next meeting. Just be prepared for off days. It won’t be exactly the same as when you were away; life may get in the way now that you’re both back to your normal routine. Just take it slow and see how it goes.

Enjoy your holiday romance but always make sensible decisions!
