You read about healthy living all the time. If you searched online, you’d find thousands of articles on this subject. So what do you really need to do to be healthier, and which changes should you enforce first?

Smoking

Most smokers know that every cigarette is bad for them, but this doesn’t always mean they want to give up. Perhaps you’ve found it impossible to quit before. Maybe you enjoy smoking, and you don’t want to stop. The reality is that smoking is the most harmful thing you can do to your body. It increases the risk of several life-threatening illnesses and is the most common preventable cause of death. Cigarettes contain hundreds of toxic chemicals, including carcinogens, which increase the risk of cancer. If you succeed in giving up smoking, you’ll improve your health significantly. It’s not easy, but it is doable. If you need help or support, contact your doctor or dentist. Many smokers find it easier to quit if they do it with others. Group sessions can be hugely beneficial.

Drinking

Drinking too much carries major risks for your vital organs. The latest guidelines suggest a maximum intake of two drinks per day for men and women. If you drink more than this, make an effort to cut down. Swap alcoholic drinks for soft drinks, and consider staying in rather than going out. Avoid shots, and keep a diary so that you know how much you consume on an average week.

Being more active

Living a sedentary lifestyle can put you at risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer. The good news is that’s easy to be more active. Walk down the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Cycle or jog to work. Go for a run or do a workout at home. Spend the weekends at a national park rather than a movie theater. You may be thinking about joining a gym. Healthy eating
