The “Hollywood smile” seems irritatingly elusive. Like a lot of us, you’ve probably seen a video or a picture with some celebrity grinning into the camera, and been captivated by their rows of perfectly straight and perfectly white teeth. Then, you grin into a mirror and become immediately disappointed with what you see. If you’re shooting for the perfect smile, the first thing you need to understand is that it doesn’t exist. However, there are certainly ways you can get a bit closer. Here are a few pointers for improving your smile.
Hopefully, you’re already brushing your teeth twice a day and using the right technique. The next step towards a great smile after this is straightening your teeth out. Understandably, you may associate braces with kids and teenagers. From a medical standpoint though, you’re never too old for orthopaedic treatment. Sure, your braces or aligners will be a bit of an eyesore in all your pictures for a while. However, once you’re able to take them off, the difference will be huge. Your teeth will have that perfect alignment which every movie star flashes us from pictures and screens. Aside from that, this kind of treatment will close up any gaps between your teeth. This will reduce the chances of you getting tooth decay in the future, as food and sugar can’t get trapped in between the gaps. This brings me onto my next point.
If there’s one thing which ruins the look of a broad grin more than anything, it’s gaps in between teeth or places where teeth are missing. You might have had one knocked out by a nasty accident. Hopefully it wasn’t a fight, anyway! Some unlucky people simply have certain teeth which never grow, and go through life with a false tooth fixed to a retainer. Unfortunately, there’s only one permanent and effective solution to this; dental implants. These fill in the gaps in your smile by a small socket being drilled into your gum (under anesthesia!) and a titanium post being installed. An artificial tooth is then fixed to the post, permanently remedying this big aesthetic blemish.
Finally, consider tooth whitening treatments. Despite what the magazines would have us believe, perfectly white teeth aren’t the norm. When we’re kids and our adult teeth start coming through, they’re generally a healthy, vibrant shade of white. However, as we age, this is darkened by a variety of things. Smoking is a big culprit, and can leave nasty tar stains which can stay there forever. Various foods also contain things which cling to the surface of the teeth, and give it a darker shade over time. Chocolate and red wine are big ones. How unfair is that! Fortunately, there are now various tooth-whitening treatments available to us. Go to your local drugstore, and you’ll find dozens of different tooth-whitening products that you can use at home. However, if you want results that will be a little more guaranteed, go to your dentist and ask about a professional tooth-whitening treatment.
