There’s definitely a lot of divided opinion out there when it comes to health supplements – or health in general, actually, but while health supplements are definitely not intended to the primary way you take care of yourself, replace a balanced diet, or a healthy lifestyle, some of them certainly have many benefits that can work together with good lifestyle habits to make you feel even better.
As with anything you choose to put in your body, make sure you do your research and ensure that the supplement is actually going to benefit you in a tangible way – not just because it’s what the celebrities or your friends are saying is the latest and greatest miracle cure for anything.
TURMERIC: this ground spice from the ginger family is used commonly in cooking – especially in curries to give them that warm flavor, but traditionally it’s been used in Eastern medicine for centuries, and is well known and sought after for its natural healing properties. The range of benefits offered by turmeric are too massive to list here, but all you need to do is enter the word into Google to find a huge range of ways to consume turmeric daily for maximum effect. While some people like to consume the raw powder in their food, or even drink as tea or mix with coconut milk and raw cocoa powder to make a warm substitute to hot chocolate, many people don’t enjoy the strong flavor of the powder, so they prefer to opt for capsules instead. These can be found in pretty much any supermarket, or in health food stores as well as online.
VITAMIN C: although it’s very well known that our bodies need a daily dose of vitamin C, usually obtained through a balanced diet that contains fruit and veg, most of us still fall short on getting the full amount our bodies actually need. Vitamin C is important to maintain a healthy immune system, and although it’s good to get as much as possible all year round, it’s especially great at keeping away nasty colds and flus, so can prove extra effective in winter time. If you ever look at the package of cold and flu capsules or drinking powders, you’ll see that many of them have added Vitamin C in them for this reason. Vitamin C is a pretty cheap supplement and is readily available in most places online and offline, so it’s really just about what you prefer. You can take it either as a capsule, a tablet, or in straight up powder or liquid form. When taking this supplement, make sure you follow the recommended daily amount guideline for yourself and for children, because although it’s good for you, taking too much isn’t the best idea.
IRON: this is something that our bodies need, and is already found in the blood cells, but it’s our job to maintain enough levels to prevent things anemia, which is caused by an iron deficiency. Before you go taking an additional iron supplement, you really need to ensure that it’s necessary, because too much of this can have quite dangerous side effects – especially in children. A lot of the iron we obtain through natural diet comes from dark grains, green, leafy vegetables, and red meat. However, depending on how good we are at keeping a balanced diet, we may need a little extra, which can usually be sufficiently provided through a multi vitamin tablet that contains just a small boost of iron to keep your levels right. If you’re feeling tired all the time or just sluggish in general, your doctor may check your iron levels to determine if a higher dose supplement is needed. Depending on the results of this, they will either recommend you buy some supplements from a health store, or they may even prescribe you some to prevent or treat anemia.
WEIGHT LOSS: due to a lot of sleazy advertising and infomercials, weight loss supplements have gained a pretty unfair negative reputation in recent years, but they’re not all bad. Many people have seen amazing results with supplements such as orlistat tablets for helping them with weight loss. Of course, you have to be sensible, do your research, choose a good company to buy from, and actually follow the instructions. If you think that weight loss supplements are something you’d like to try, then just ensure that you take them only as a supplement and not treat them as a magic bullet solution losing weight overnight. Typically these supplements, as with any kind of supplement work best in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet, and that’s when you’ll actually start seeing real results with them.
