How To Improve Your Man’s Look (Without Upsetting Him)

In some ways, men have a tough time of it when it comes to fashion, beauty, and style. That’s beauty using the catch-all term of referring to anything to do with skincare and grooming, of course – it might be becoming more common, but we’re probably a way off men feeling confident enough to rock a full makeup look.

But yes, it’s definitely trickier for men than women when it comes to handling their appearance. As women, we’re constantly exposed to images of what we’re meant to look like. Not only that, the internet is full of advice on how to get our eyebrows looking just right or how to use color-correction to hide a multitude of skin woes.

The same just isn’t true for guys. Aside from a few blogs and the occasional magazine, for the most part, they’re left to figure it out for themselves. It’s natural, therefore, that you might occasionally want to step in with some guiding tips to set your partner on the right path – but how do you do it without upsetting a fragile ego?

DON’T Infer He’s Been Incorrect

If you decide to be more upfront, it’s important that you don’t make it sound like he’s been doing something wrong. You might be itching to say something like, here’s how to manscape the RIGHT way, but all he’s going to hear is, you have been manscaping the WRONG way. That can upset anyone. However, it is possible to do this if you relate it to your own experiences. For example, you could enthuse about how you’re so glad you now know how to do your eyeshadow the RIGHT way and then casually ask if he has ever wondered about anything to do with his grooming that he might be doing in a way that’s less than perfect.

DO Let Them Pick Up On Your Hints

Rather than making an outright direct statement (which can be a potential flashpoint no matter how you word it), you could opt to hint rather than state. You’d say you think that color really suits him and he should wear more of it, rather than directly instructing him to wear that color more often. If you dress up your constructive criticism in a compliment, it’s more likely to be taken well.

DON’T Just Barrel In There

If you turn to him one night and say, “hey hon? Your fashion sense is a disaster and I want to come shopping with you to correct it”, then about the only thing you have done correctly is score a few points for honesty. While it might feel best to just get it out there and have the conversation, think about how you would feel if one of your girlfriends spoke to you in such a brusque way. There’s honesty and then there’s just hurting someone’s feelings; don’t fall into the trap of confusing the two.

As you can see, the vast majority of this conversation is based around what you shouldn’t do rather than what you should. Be considerate and gentle, and you’ll find yourself with a whole new man before you even know it.
