Spend More Time With Your Seniors + Learn From Their Experience

Your grandma might not be the first person you think to Whatsapp for advice about your life (she probably doesn’t even know what Whatsapp is). However, the aging members of your family will have knowledge and experience that only comes with getting older, so they shouldn’t be dismissed because of how many candles they have to blow out on their birthday cake.

Making time for and taking care of your older family members will reward you in many ways, so it’s worth putting some effort into hanging out and ensuring they’re living a happy life. The following are some ideas for those who want to do more for their elderly loved ones and are excited to find out how it will enrich their own life.

Relationship Advice

Believe it or not; your grandparents have been through all the struggles, and ups and downs, of a relationship, whether they’re romantic or friendship-based. The only difference is they wouldn’t have had the added pressure of social media, and everything was done the old-fashioned (and brave) way; over the phone. There were no instant messages; your grandma would’ve had to call someone to arrange meeting somewhere at a particular time. Therefore, your senior family members will know a thing or two about behavior and how to treat other people.

Don’t be afraid to be open and honest; your elderly loved one will know you better than you know yourself, so their advice will reflect that. You may not want to follow their suggestions to the letter; however, you’ll be able to take some great ideas from the conversation and implement them as you see fit. Your grandma will love spending the time with you and appreciate being listened to; you’ll get to know her better and strengthen your bond too.

Companionship

If you’re feeling lonely, or perhaps something’s upset you that your friends can’t help you with (maybe they’re the cause of the issue) you should pick up the phone and call an older relative. Or, head over to their home for some cookies and milk; they’re bound to make you feel better. It’s also vital that you ensure your elderly family member isn’t feeling low or isolated; you could look into a senior companion program for those times that you can’t be around because of college or your job. Be vigilant and notice any changes in a person’s demeanor or health; this will help to ensure their quality of life is high and you can enjoy each other’s company all the more.

If you feel like going to the movies or out for some food; call your grandparents and make one or both along for the fun. Be prepared to make allowances for health and mobility requirements, and enjoy experiencing situations together and seeing them from a senior point of view. Remember that you’ll be in their shoes one day; so treat your older family with the respect, care, and kindness they deserve and that you’ll want when you age.
